Learning Outcomes
From this resource it is anticipated that students will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of maps, longitude and latitude, directions and
spatial comprehension.
- Use critical thinking in decision-making.
- Be creative and use imagination in solving a problem.
- Develop an understanding of the influence of Western European Society on
the world through discovery and the opening of trade routes.
The 4 routes of exploration covered in this resource are:
- Vasco De Gama's voyage of 1497, the 1st European to open a sea route from
Europe to the East.
- The voyages of Captain James Cook in the 1760's that resulted in Europeans
settling in Australia.
- Christopher Columbus' 1492 voyage to the shores of the Americas and thus
paving the way for European settlement.
- The voyage of Eric the Red to Greenland; and Leif Ericsson's discovery of
Newfoundland circa 1000 AD.

- COPY the TREASURE MAPS (4), one copy of each.
- COPY the WORLD MAP, 4 copies should be available, one for each group.
- COPY one each of the 'Solution Treasure Maps' for you to assist students
with the clues.
Equipment Required:
- 4 protractors.
- 2 or 3 atlases for each crew.
- 4 clipboards and 4 pencils.
- Note: if available, a protractor and atlas for each student.
